Suzy Lake is a renowned Toronto-based artist who has been exploring issues relating to the body, gender and identity since the late 1960s.

By using post-production strategies as well as costumes, make-up or props, Suzy Lake transforms herself into characters, like Miss Chatelaine, a Spice Girl or Dirk Bogarde, to explore ideas including beauty, femininity, identity and aging.

In this image, Lake presents a double image of herself in a white slip dress, sweeping a dusty floor filled with rubble. The photo comes from a site-specific installation presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of Ontario, taken during the last month's of the museum's major renovation project.

In 2008, Lake revisited this work during Toronto's CONTACT Photography festival.

The image has several rich allusions notably Cinderella and the division of labor between genders. Lake draws attention to the social norms and its limits. From pop culture to fine art, we are forced to admit that aging women are absent from public consciousness.

Suzy Lake has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, most recently in the significant exhibition WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, in New York.

In 2014, she was the focus of a career spanning retrospective at the Art Gallery of Ontario, with a substantial book titled Introducing Suzy Lake.
