Sam Francis
SAM FRANCIS "NATIONAL" LITHOGRAPH, 1968
A preeminent figure in 20th century abstraction, Sam Francis (1923-1994) is renowned for his dynamic and colorful works. His signature style is frequently defined by gestural and colorful 'frames' that leave a central part of the surface nearly untouched.
Printmaking was an essential part of his practice. Francis became so transfixed by the medium, he would establish his own printing studio...but only after collaborating with, and experimenting at the best American printing studios, notably Gemini and Tamarind, both in Los Angeles. Â
Francis had established an international reputation in the 1950's, while still being based in Paris. After Francis left Paris in 1961, establishing a studio in New York, he became an art world star and one of the leading members from the second generation of artists innovating within abstract painting. For example, he was included in Clement Greenberg’s milestone exhibition, “Post Painterly Abstraction” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1964, alongside American artists including Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, and Morris Louis.
"Untitled" is a perfect example of Francis' printmaking, with its joyous and dynamic frame that contrasts an nearly untouched center.Â
This exemplary print by Sam Francis can be found in many museum collections including the MoMA
