SAM FRANCIS "TALL GROOVE" ETCHING, 1984
Caviar20 is pleased to be offering this fantastic Sam Francis etching.
Sam Francis (b. 1923 - 1994) is known as one of America’s most dynamic second-generation abstract expressionist painters. He is credited with fusing the trends and approaches of the New York school with the style and discipline of the French post-war abstract artists.
Francis spent most of the 1950's working/exhibiting in places including Paris, Mexico City, New York and Switzerland. As a result, he is somewhat independent of the collectives and "isms" that are normally used to describe post-war abstraction. Working and exhibiting in Paris resulted in Francis becoming linked with the parallel movement of Art Informel in Europe.
In 1953 one of his canvases was included in the MoMA's seminal exhibition "Twelve Artists" which quickly led to his international reputation. The 1960’s began with Francis pursuing a form of spontaneous gestural ‘drippings,’. This approach to painting, along with his growing interest in the void, firmly established his iconic style.
Francis was a prolific printmaker and experimented at the best American printing studios, notably Gemini and Tamarind, both in Los Angeles. However he became so transfixed by the medium, he would establish his own printing studio in Santa Monica and also started a publishing wing focused on creative texts.
Throughout his dynamic career, Francis' work was exhibited in numerous exhibitions at key galleries and museums around the world, ranging from Gagosian, to the Fondation Beyeler, Basel
