Henry Moore
HENRY MOORE "HEAD" BRONZE, 1981
Henry Moore (1898-1986) is one of the most revered and influential British artists of the 20th century. While he worked in a number of different media and styles, Moore is best known for his revolutionary work in bronze sculpture.
Moore had a long (and at times, complicated) relationship with Toronto, with multiple works still on public display throughout the city. Additionally, a vast collection of Moore’s work can be found at the Henry Moore Sculpture Centre, an internationally acclaimed permanent display at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
The human figure is an essential motif in Moore’s oeuvre, throughout his illustrious career. This piece is a fantastic example of Moore’s work in bronze, albeit on a much more intimate scale.
Featuring a semi-abstracted head positioned on top of a narrow neck and/or torso, this piece is indicative of Moore’s exploration with proportion. Like the best of Moore’s work, the unusual proportions exist in harmony, maintaining an unexpected semblance of balance.Â
Unique to this work is the inclusion of soft, asymmetrical features, which are typically omitted in Moore’s larger works. The distinctive features are a refreshing look at Moore’s figurative abstraction, while still honoring the natural grooves of the material at hand. Â
Today, Moore’s work is enjoyed across the globe with public sculptures spanning across 38 countries. His legacy is preserved by the Henry Moore Foundation, a registered charity in support of the arts, located in Perry Green, Hertfordshire where the artist lived and worked for 40 years.
