Charles Pachter is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists.Â
His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums from coast to coast.Â
While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with Jim Dine and David Hockney, his style is resoundingly charming, singular and uniquely Canadian.
Reminiscent of Pachter's iconic Moose Plunge, this early print, "Plunge", is an elegant example of Pachter’s figuration. Minimal mark-making on either side of the figure demonstrates a graphic approach to depicting momentum. Pachter’s swimmer cuts through the space on the paper, creating an evocative reaction to the sensation and spectacle of jumping from a tall diving platform. While this work can appear to be an anomaly in his oeuvre, on reflection the artist has repeatedly depicted leisure by water, as Pachter has created varied images of docks, beaches, ocean waves and shoreline scenes.Â
Charles Pachter is represented in both public and private collections across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Portrait Gallery of Canada, The Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. The artist has also had solo exhibitions in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, India, the United States and Bangladesh. Charles Pachter holds the prestigious position of Officer of the Order of Canada and is also a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal.Â
