DAVID HOCKNEY "LUXEMBOURG" PHOTO, 1974
Caviar20 is pleased to be offering another example of one of David Hockney's photographs from his famed 1976 portfolio.
David Hockney (b. 1937) had an interesting relationship with photography- both using it as a tool and simultaneously subverting and pushing the boundaries of the medium.
Most notably, from the 70's until the early 80's Hockney experimented and produced a wide body of photo-based work including his highly innovative photo-collages, called "Joiners".
This work, which is from the portfolio "Twenty Photographic Pictures, 1976" Hockney is directly playing with the expectations of painter and photographer.
We often assume that figurative painters (only) paint from photographs. That photos are a crutch or a necessity for successful canvases.
Here the preparatory material becomes a work in its own right...and a testament to Hockney's genius.
