FRANK STELLA "SINJERLI VARIATIONS" LITHOGRAPH, 1977
We may not be willing to sell this to you...because we want it for ourselves!
Frank Stella (b. 1936) is one of our favorite 20th century artists- he disrupted Abstract Expressionism and ushered in a new era of painting that led to Minimalism, hard edge abstraction, Op Art and even Conceptual art.
His "Sinjerli" series (begun in the late 1960's) were radical for their shaped canvases, exuberant palettes and fascinating geometry.
Their title refers to concentric circular cities in ancient Asia and the Middle East.
Stella's "protractor" works are his most iconic and sought after.
This series of double "protractors" with opposite palettes is Stella at his best - paradigms of American printmaking:
Each work was a combined offset lithograph and screenprint realized with 27 plates.
