Gerhard Richter
GERHARD RICHTER "BAGHDAD: 914-2", 2010
Gerhard Richter (b.1932) is one of the most successful living artists of all time, and currently the highest-paid living artist. Born in Germany, and producing most of his work there, Richter has broken formal, expressive, and conceptual boundaries to produce a diverse and monumental oeuvre.
Richter is known for a stylistically varied exploration of the medium of painting. He could be described as ambidextrous as he has had success as both a figurative and and abstract artist.
“Baghdad” is a fine example of Richter' dynamic and color-rich abstractions. Produced by Heni Productions and the Serpentine Galleries under the artist’s close supervision, the Baghdad series is a beautiful, accessible example by one of today’s most iconic artists.
In 2012 Richter set a record auction price for a painting by a living artist at $34 million. Since then, he has broken his own record twice, most recently in 2015 at a Sotheby's auction commanding $44.5 million for a work.Â
Gerard Richter is also the subject of a full-length documentary, Gerhard Richter Painting, which follows him as he produces his series of large abstract paintings using squeegees (a nod to the tool sometimes used in his "blur" paintings).Â
