Herbert List (1903-1975) was a German photographer who worked in a variety of genres including travel photography, war reportage, fashion photography, portraiture and Surrealism.

List came from a wealthy family and was able to dedicate himself to photography. In 1936, he left Germany for Paris because of both creative reasons and the increasingly hostile political situation.

Over the next 30 years or so List had a fascinatingly versatile and dynamic career. Particularly in the 1950's List was a sought-after portrait photographer and shot many of the European avant-garde or cultural elite of the era including Picasso, Colette, Miro, Chagall, Stravinsky, Cocteau, Alexander Calder, George Braque, Marlene Dietrich and the list goes on.

Fritz Kortner (1892-1970) was an Austrian stage and screen actor and theatre director. His film career began taking off in Germany in 1916, ultimately appearing in over 90 films. He was known for his explosive energy and booming voice. Kortner fled to the US in the 1930's due to the rise of Nazism. Remarkably he was one of the few Jews who would return to Germany after the war at the end of the 1940's. Upon his return, Kortner focused on theatre directing and received critical acclaim for his innovative staging and direction of classic plays.

Caviar20 recommends Herbert List: The Monograph as a comprehensive introduction to his work.
