$4,000

With a world auction record of $7.4 million, broken again in the Spring of 2017, Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) is arguably the most successful post-war abstract painter from Canada.

While Americans have traditionally favored Jackson Pollock as the most influential Abstract Expressionist of the 20th century, in Europe (and beyond) Riopelle's stature is of competing importance for his version of 'automatic' action painting.

This joyful and uplifting Riopelle print is ideal for both the young collector and a Riopelle connoisseur.

Riopelle's later chapters of production were different from the material that made his famous. His later works became more structured, more luminous and gentler as he experimented with figuration and brighter and often more cohesive palettes. s.

This lithograph, with its palette of indigo blue, hunter green, red, silver, fushia and gold is distinctive paradigm of Riopelle's printmaking from the last chapter of his remarkable life.

"Paillettes" has an interesting background. It was a benefit edition the artist produced in honor of Walter Homberger's retirement from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1987.

This work can be found in public collections such as Le Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
