Jenny Holzer (b. 1950) is a multi-disciplinary American artist best known for her text-based public art projects. She was the first woman to represent the United States at the 1990 Venice Biennale. This work, comprised of four photographs, presents images from her projection “Truth Before Power,” organized by the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria in 2004.
Some of Holzer's most innovative and impressive public works used xenon lamps to create public messages intended to be ‘seen and absorbed rather than read’. Holzer projected texts including US government documents, a poem by Henri Cole, and Holzer’s own statements regarding architectural landmarks and landscape panoramas.
The four images that comprise "Truth Before Power" are paradigms of both the artist's aesthetic and her singular approach to public art. In this work, she combines her famous slogans, poetry, and redacted documents from the American government. The artist reminds the viewer how language can either expose or reinforce dominant power structures.
Imbued with the exposing of ‘classified’ information, we see a pivotal example of Holzer’s influence and trajectory. This exclusive edition of four demonstrates high-end production and the close collaboration between Holzer and the Kunsthaus Bregenz.
