NAN GOLDIN "JOEY AND ANDRES IN BED" 1992

$12,500

Nan Goldin's body of work is consistently personal. In recent years she has been credited as a sort of godmother of the selfie, a prophetess who created a model of artistic expression now embraced by millennials documenting their lives and sharing their most intimate images.

Goldin was the first to unflinchingly document the romance, tragedy, triumphs and adventures of her friends and lovers.

In the early nineties, as Goldin's reputation accelerated, she received a DAAD grant from the German government for a stay in Berlin. Some of her best images are attributed to this period in this transformative city.

"Joey" is one of Goldin's main muses, appearing in a large number of iconic images from the early 90's and into the following decade. The best images of Joey present her as beautiful but pensive and mysterious.

Goldin's images of couples are arguably the bedrock of her oeuvre - consider her famous slide show "The Ballard of Sexual Dependency" or take a look at which images an institution such as MoMA has collected over the course of her career
