Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) is one of the most distinctive and influential artists of the 20th century.

He shaped and defined many of the century's most cerebral "isms" notably minimalism and conceptual art.

His large scale "wall drawings" destabilized and expanded the conventional definition of authorship - many of his works were created as the result of elaborate instructions rather than his own hand and labor.

Some of these classic "wall drawings" were  temporary - only lasting the duration of the exhibition.

Caviar20 highly recommends a visit to DIA:Beacon in upstate New York to see some classic example of LeWitt's work.

Wikipedia has a generous and comprehensive on LeWitt's life and work.

This particular work is a paradigm of LeWitt's work - fine lines, an intricate composition and whispered colors.

The "Composite Series" can be found numerous museum collections including the MoMA, the Met and the Tate.
