SOREL ETROG "ATHLETE" BRONZE, 1967

$16,000

Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor.

His work can be found in numerous museum and private collections including the Tate, the AGO and LACMA.

His public sculptures can be found on iconic corners in Toronto, Montreal, Israel and beyond.

Etrog was elected a member of the Order of Canada in 1994 and two years later became a Chevalier of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.

The Art Gallery of Ontario organized a major retrospective of his work that ran during 2013.

This work is a paradigm of Etrog's practice from his breakout decade. Mysterious and sensual, Etrog's form synthesizes a myriad of influences; tribal art, religious statuary and the rising force of Modernism.

The late 1960's are arguably the most collected and coveted period of production in Etrog's oeuvre. This was an incredibly fruitful time: within a period of less than five years Etrog had solo exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Milan, Berlin and Rome.
