Sorel Etrog
SOREL ETROG "STUDY I" BRONZE, 1964
Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor.
His work can be found in numerous museum and private collections including the Tate, the AGO and LACMA.
His public sculptures can be found on iconic corners in Toronto, Montreal, Israel and beyond.
Etrog was elected a member of the Order of Canada in 1994 and two years later became a Chevalier of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
The Art Gallery of Ontario organized a major retrospective of his work that ran during 2013.
This work is a paradigm of Etrog's practice from his breakout decade. Mysterious and sensual, Etrog's form synthesizes a myriad of influences; tribal art, religious statuary and the rising force of Modernism.
"Study 1" was created shortly after Etrog closed his studio in New York City and committed to developing his practice in Toronto. This was an incredibly fruitful period: within a period of less than five years Etrog had solo exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Milan, Berlin and Rome.
Finally, "Study 1" is one of the last sculptures from the mid-sixties before Etrog invents and embraces the "links" motif. If we examine the forms on the back and mid-section of this figure, we can see the precursors to this design.
"Study 1" is an important, but accessible example of Etrog's early bronze sculpture.
