TAKAO TANABE "BARKLEY SOUND", 2007
Takao Tanabe (b. 1926) is one of Canada's most accomplished artists of the 20th century.
The artist has dedicated a large part of his illustrious career to depicting the landscape of his home province - British Columbia. Amazingly, Tanabe focused on geometric abstract painting for several decades before gradually embracing figuration in the early 1980's.
This ethereal woodblock print perfectly captures the wet elements evocative of the BC coastline when land, sky and sea are united in experiencing the prevailing dampness of the atmosphere.
This is a fine example of Tanabe's mastery as a printmaker and depicting the West Coast environment.
Tanabe's work can be found in numerous important collections across Canada and beyond including:
the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Glenbow Museum (Calgary), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) and the Tate Museum, U.K
