Yves Gaucher
YVES GAUCHER "FUGUE JUANE" RELIEF PRINT, 1963
Yves Gaucher (1934-2000) is one of Quebec's most important and influential printmakers and painters.
Like Harold Town, Gaucher first established his reputation as a printmaker in the 1950s, capitalizing on technological advancements which enabled extensive exploration throughout the decade and beyond.
Gaucher's relief prints from the early 1960s are renowned for their revolutionary technique, a process perfected by the artist through comprehensive experimentation.
"Fugue Juane" is an exemplary output from this era. Delicate geometric shapes in black, white, and canary yellow are dispersed across the work, filling the center of the page. The inclusion of color in this work marks a turning point for Gaucher who previously utilized grayscale when working within the medium.
It's worth noting that the geometric qualities in this work serve as a precursor to Gaucher's commitment to hard-edge abstraction in the years to follow. Click here for an example of a painting that succeeded this work.
"Fugue Juane" can be found in the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Canada.
In 1965, Gaucher would represent Canada at the Venice Biennale (along with Alex Colville and Sorel Etrog). His work is featured in permanent collections around the world including The Museum of Modern Art (New York City) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), to name a few.
