ZAHA HADID "VITRA FIRE STATION" COLLOTYPE, 1993
In 2016, abruptly and before her time, the world lost one of the most innovative, uncompromising and original architects of our era: the inimitable Zaha Hadid.
During the late 80's and well into the the 90's Zaha Hadid was an admired architect who only had a handful of projects actually realized (despite winning many architectural competitions)
Vitra, the renowned European furniture maker, commissioned her first realized project. The company has their headquarters, including corporate offices, showrooms and factories located on a "campus" in Germany, nearby Basel, Switzerland.
In the late 80's a fire destroyed several buildings. The significant losses were mainly due to the fact that the company's complex was out of the jurisdiction of the fire stations in the region.
So, in 1993 Vitra commissioned Hadid to work on the campus' new masterplan and actually build her avant-garde vision of a "Feuerwehrhaus" or fire station.
The fire station would be Hadid's first realized project and subsequently launched her career.
Many of the characteristics of this first building can be seen in her subsequent work, notably its impressive dramatic angles and fearless asymmetry.
While the fire station was eventually converted into a museum, it remains an important and iconic example of architecture on the campus (which also has buildings by Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry and Herzog & de Meuron)
That year Vitra and Hadid published a collotype of the fire station as a gift for their best clients.
This is a very rare and important work in the context of Hadid's career. This piece will be a cherished addition to your art/design collection.

Our inventory is divided between New York and Toronto.
- Where do you ship to?
We can ship anywhere. Typically when we ship within North America we prefer to use FedEx or DHL. To Europe, Asia and beyond we generally use DHL.
- How much does it cost to ship?
For shipments within North America, we typically charge a flat rate fee. Many items on our site will list the rate. For shipping outside of North America, we can easily provide a quote and will look for the most efficient and economical option.
Most of the items on our site can be easily shipped internationally.
Occasionally we will recommend that an artwork be removed from its frame for shipping. Larger framed works are typically framed with plexiglass. We export over 80% of what we sell, so we are comfortable shipping anywhere.
- Are there additional taxes or fees?
When a work is valued above $2,500 usd there is a possibility of tax of 0.35%, but this is applied sporadically. There can similarly be an additional fee for customs brokerage and this can range from $20 - $65. US Taxes, duties and customs brokerage are not included in our flat rate shipping. However most of our shipments to the US enter without any additional fees.
- Do you provide a certificate of authenticity?
Yes, we guarantee everything we sell. We can provide both a digital and printed version of our certificate of authenticity.
What is your return policy?

Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer. After 8 days returns are given a credit note. There is no expiration for our credit notes.
