Louise Nevelson
LOUISE NEVELSON "CELEBRATION", 1979
As always, Caviar20 is thrilled to present the esteemed work of Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. Though best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson explored the many different branches of printmaking.
In the 1970s Nevelson completed a portfolio of six aquatint etchings entitled “Celebration”. Each aquatint was designed from collaged maquettes composed of torn colored paper and Nevelson’s own etchings. Nevelson then worked with master printers to render her maquettes into expertly crafted prints.
Note that while colorful and textured, these prints still manage to make use of Nevelson’s signature color –black. Nevelson's prints (and collages from the corresponding era) are virtually the only part of her oeuvre where she works with color.
Nevelson's work is instantly recognizable and is positioned in an interesting place within the canon of art history, situated between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Her work has had an undeniable influence on a host of significant artists including Tony Cragg and Louise Bourgeois.
In 2016 Louise Nevelson was Caviar20's fastest-selling artist. As interest in her work is compounding rapidly, her prints are, like the rest of her work, becoming less accessible. This is a fantastic work for a young collector, or to complement an existing sculpture in your collection.
