Louise Nevelson
LOUISE NEVELSON "COLLEGIATE", 1972
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this fantastic sculpture by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century.
Over the last few years, there has been tremendous momentum in both interest and appreciation of her work. In May of 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature white construction sculptures. (However, this is still a bargain considering the auction records of her male colleagues such as John Chamberlain, at $4.7 million, or Joseph Cornell, at $7.7 million)
We've also noticed that more and more public collections are re-installing her works in their displays from their permanent collections (the Whitney in New York City and the Pérez Art Museum in Miami are notable examples)
So it comes as no surprise that the previous Nevelson works we've recently offered, such as "The Dark Ellipse" and "City Sun-scape", have been quickly snatched up by savvy collectors. Louise Nevelson was Caviar20's fastest-selling artist in 2016.
"Collegiate" is a striking table-top sculpture that appears to be a decal or award from some future society. Like the best of Nevelson's work, there are allusions to tribal art and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture.
This is an interesting example of the "Collegiate" sculpture as it has been mounted to a white acrylic background (as opposed to the smoked acrylic version)
