Louise Nevelson

LOUISE NEVELSON "WINTER CHORD" SCULPTURE, 1975

Caviar20 is excited to be offering this exemplary sculpture by Louise Nevelson (b. 1899), one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century.

There has been a tremendous renewal of interest and appreciation for Nevelson’s work in recent years. Last May, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson’s signature wall sculptures.

Despite such numbers, Nevelson remains significantly undervalued compared to her male peers. While this is troubling and surprising, there is a great opportunity for savvy collectors to acquire top works that are bound to appreciate.

In Nevelson’s world, “Winter Chord” is synonymous with the sculptural box. She began to work in this specific form in the mid ‘60s and would have exhibitions devoted to it in the following decade.

This rare edition in wood is composed of nine monochromatic, matte black boxes that reveal variations of Nevelson’s unique geometric abstractions, alluding to tribal art and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture. It is emblematic of Nevelson’s artistic vision and groundbreaking aesthetic.

Overseas, Nevelson was first collected in Italy because of parallels to Arte Povera. She had an important and enduring connection to Italy, representing America at the Venice Biennale in 1962.

Most of Nevelson’s editioned sculptures were made in cast resin, and were mainly sold in America by Pace, her longtime gallery. “Winter Chord” was published by Marconi, Nevelson’s Italian gallery, and does not often surface outside of Europe.

"Winter Chord" is completed with a monochromatic matte black case that covers the surface of this work, concealing its unique recesses and curvatures with a sleek finish.

Today, Louise Nevelson’s work can be found in major museum collections around the world. An increasing number of public collections are reinstalling her works in their displays from their permanent collections, including the Whitney in New York City, the AGO in Toronto and the Pérez Art Museum in Miami.

Additional photos of the case are available upon request.
