Louise Nevelson

LOUISE NEVELSON "FULL MOON", 1980

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century.

While renowned and internationally recognized for her elaborate black sculptures, Nevelson experimented with printmaking and editioned sculptures throughout her lifetime. In the 1960-70s, there was a surge in the production of multiples by many significant artists, including Louise Nevelson, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Donald Judd, and Jeff Koons. The popularity and ethos of Pop Art was one reason for this swell of mass production, alongside an acceptance of industrialization and a desire to make respected artwork accessible to a wider audience.

"Full Moon" depicts a circle in a square. Three-dimensional elements sit perfectly tetris-ed atop a circular plane. The combined elements offer a grid with grooves, curved lines, and geometric textures.

While there is a natural fluidity to the work, with the omniscient, anchoring sphere and the seamless joining of pieces, there is also a sense that the piece has been carefully orchestrated with precision. While speaking with friend and playwright Edward Albee, Nevelson mused, "When you square the circle, you are in a place of wisdom." While this mystical statement doesn't quite offer a concrete explanation of "Full Moon," it unmistakably expresses her conviction in the power of form.

This rare edition is composed of Nevelson's signature monochromatic, matte, black geometric abstractions. Through this unique style, the artist alludes to African art and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture. It is emblematic of Nevelson’s artistic vision and groundbreaking aesthetic.

There has been a tremendous renewal of interest and appreciation for Nevelson’s work in recent years. In 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson’s signature wall sculptures.

Today, Louise Nevelson’s work can be found in major museum collections around the world. An increasing number of public collections are reinstalling her works in their displays from their permanent collections including the Whitney in New York City, which has the largest holding of her oeuvre internationally. Nevelson's work was the subject of a solo exhibition "Persistence" at the 2022 Venice Biennale, which commemorated the 60th anniversary of the artist's presentation at the 1962 American Pavilion of the Venice Biennale.
