Walasse Ting
Walasse Ting (1929-2010) was an accomplished painter, poet and publisher. During his lifetime he was a both a friend and colleague of many of the most important avant-garde abstract painters, in both New York City and in Europe.
Ting moved to Paris in 1952 and was affiliated with the members of Cobra, notably Pierre Alechinsky and Karel Appel. In 1957 Ting moved to New York City. He would become a close friend of Sam Francis. It is easy to see the influence of both artists' on the other's work. In the 1970's his work became increasingly figurative and was influenced by traditional Chinese painting methods. His aesthetic, highly stylized and dedicated to exuberant pastels and jewel tones, is instantly recognized for its combination of Chinese stylings and expressionism.
