Louise Nevelson
LOUISE NEVELSON "DARK CRYPTIC" SCULPTURE, 1975
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this fantastic sculpture by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century.
Over the last few years, there has been tremendous momentum in the renewed interest and appreciation of her work. In May of 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature white construction sculptures.
We've also noticed that more and more public collections are re-installing her works in their displays from their permanent collections (the Whitney in New York City, the AGO in Toronto and the Pérez Art Museum in Miami are notable examples)
Yet despite this institutional support, Nevelson remains significantly undervalued compared to her male peers. Consider that John Chamberlain's auction record is $5.5 million...While this is troubling and surprising, for the savvy collector, there is a great opportunity to acquire top works that are bound to appreciate.
In Nevelson's world "Cryptic" is synonymous with the sculptural box. She begins to work in this specific form circa 1965 and would have exhibitions devoted to it during the 1970s. The form is both dynamic and intimate as it can be easily repositioned and kept open or closed, at each angle or position, revealing different sculpture elements evocative of Nevelson's unique aesthetic.
This work "Dark Cryptic XI" was purchased from the Makler Gallery in Philadelphia in 1977 and owned by the same family since. Purchase includes an original signed receipt from the gallery.
